On a hot sunny day in August we planned to take a day trip to Toledo from Madrid. Coming from Mumbai which is usually hot and humid throughout the year, the weather alert at 34 degrees celsius in Madrid did not really alarm us! So off we went with our hats, comfortable shoes and clothing and lots of sunscreen to Toledo.
Charming Toledo Station
We took the train from Madrid Atocha to Toledo which is a short 35 minute train ride. On arriving we were simply mesmerised by the station, it is a sight to behold! The station’s architecture is a beautiful blend of wood and stained glass windows that allows vibrant colours to dance and shimmer as sunlight filters through. The station’s grand hall showcases medieval architecture, famous landmarks and beautiful cultural moments. So, if you find yourself at Toledo Station, it is a visual treat that captures the charm of this remarkable ancient city. Enjoy the experience.
We had pre-booked a hop on hop off bus ride from GetYourGuide.com. We always find great options with them and the best part, it is super easy to book and the instructions are very clear. The bus was waiting for us just across the station! So we hopped on with a pair of earphones which was handed to us by the bus driver after validating our ticket. This is also a great way to see the city and take a break from lots of walking specially when it is very hot.
History Of Toledo In Short
Toledo is strategically located on a hill overlooking the Tagus river in central Spain. Originally a roman city known as Toletum, it was established in 2nd century BCE. In 711 CE, Toledo was conquered by the Moors during the Islamic invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. Throughout the middle ages, Toledo experienced a unique blend of Muslim, Jewish and Christian cultures. The city became a melting pot of different religions, languages and artistic traditions, fostering a vibrant environment of intellectual exchange.
Toledo is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is known for its well preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture.
Our Day Out
The hop on hop off bus dropped us at the Plaza de Zocodover which is the main square of Toledo. We began to wander through the charming narrow streets and winding alleys with shops offering pretty souvenirs. We meandered along Calle del Comericio, a bustling street lined with shops selling traditional handicrafts including swords, ceramics and marzipan. We treated ourselves to some lovely ice creams and an ice slush to beat the heat. As we walked the streets we admired the intricate details of the immaculately maintained buildings and imagined the centuries of history that they hold.
The city’s most iconic landmarks is the Toledo Cathedral. We were awestruck by the grandeur of its Gothic architecture and the intricate detailing. Apparently you can also climb the bell tower for panoramic views which we missed.
As we continued to stroll through the ancient city walls we stopped to take pictures and enjoy breathtaking views of Toledo’s rooftops, churches and the countryside. One of the best view points is the Mirador del Valle where we enjoyed the sun casting its magical glow on the city. We then took a break in one of the cozy cafes and savoured some tapas accompanied by a glass of local wine.
We just did not realise how the excitement and the hustle of the day just flew by leaving us wishing for more time! We headed back to Madrid with a few regrets as we realised this grand city has so much more to offer and that we had barely just scratched the surface!
More Things To Do In Toledo
- If you are a history buff then I recommend at least a one night stay as its history is vast and encompassing. It is important to choose specific sites and activities that align with your interest. Toledo is home to lots of different museums such as the El Greco Museum, the Sephardic museum and the museum of Santa Cruz.
- Another suggestion is a visit to the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. It is a lovely Gothic building where the monks used to live in earlier times.
- Dinner in a historic setting is also a fantastic option in Toledo. Look for traditional establishments housed in centuries-old buildings where you can savour delicious regional dishes.
- Toledo is also home to some lovely parks. Cross the Puente de San Martin, a historic bridge spanning the Tagus river and explore the parks and gardens.
- Head to the Alcazar, a majestic fortress located on a hill overlooking the city.
- Visit the Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue which is an impressive synagogue built in the Mudejar style. It is one of the oldest in Europe.
We surely did not have enough of Toledo. It has cast its magical spell on us and we are already itching to return for more fun and adventure!
