Solo in the French Alps: From the Lakes of Annecy to the Peaks of Chamonix

“A solo trip that took me from the fairy-tale lake town of Annecy to the snow-kissed peaks of Chamonix.”

Annecy: Cycling by the Lake and Living a Postcard

Let me start with Annecy — a town so beautiful, it looks like it leapt straight out of a painting. Nestled by a shimmering blue lake and surrounded by mountains, Annecy was peaceful, scenic, and absolutely lovely to explore alone.

I stayed at Moxy Annecy, a stylish, modern hotel slightly outside the main town. It was quiet, comfortable, and everything was walkable from there, making it a great base for solo travellers

The first thing that took my breath away was Lake Annecy — crystal clear and alive with activity. People were swimming, sailing, paddleboarding, or just lounging by the shore. All around the lake, I saw joggers, cyclists, families with strollers, and people like me — soaking it all in.

There are multiple tracks around the lake, and you can actually cycle all the way around it. So I rented a bike from one of the many rental shops near the lake and went for it. The full loop takes about four hours, and it’s worth every minute — you’re constantly surrounded by water on one side and the French Alps on the other.

I also spent time at the Gardens of Europe — beautifully maintained, green, and blooming. A perfect spot to take a break after the ride.

The town of Annecy itself is stunning — cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, flower-lined canals, and lots of little bridges. The most Instagrammed spot (and rightfully so) is a tiny medieval castle perched on a canal, known as the Palais de l’Isle. It sits in the middle of the water like a scene from a storybook.

And let’s talk about food — the restaurants in Annecy were amazing. I had some of the best Italian food I’ve eaten outside of Italy. The vibe in the evenings was lively and relaxed, and eating solo here never felt awkward — just peaceful.

Annecy was a place where I slowed down, pedaled through beauty, and let myself just be. After soaking in all of that lake town magic, I set off for my next stop — the majestic mountains of Chamonix.

During my solo journey, I used both a Flixbus and a BlaBlaCar bus at different points, and honestly, both were super comfortable, reliable, and budget friendly. If you’re traveling within France or even across borders, I would highly recommend trying the bus once in a while-its a great alternative to the train and perfect for solo travellers looking for a relaxed, scenic ride

Chamonix: Cable Cars, Mont Blanc Views, and Alpine Awe

From Annecy, I drove to Chamonix, a charming town in eastern France, and it took around 1.5 to 2 hours. Chamonix is best known for its ski slopes, but even in summer, the town is like a dream.

I stayed at a lovely little place called Hotel Lyret — and if you’re ever going, book a room with a balcony that faces Mont Blanc. Waking up to that view was a memory I’ll never forget. The hotel was warm and welcoming, and everything in town was within walking distance.

Chamonix itself is tiny but vibrant. You can easily explore it on foot, and it’s full of cute cafes, stylish boutiques, and great restaurants. There’s a cozy alpine charm about it that makes you want to just sit at a café and watch the world go by.

But the true highlight of my time there was the cable car ride to Aiguille du Midi, one of the highest points in Europe at almost 3800 meters. The ride costs around €75 round trip, but it’s absolutely worth it. The cable car experience was surreal, ascending above the forests, glaciers, and clouds until the world below looked impossibly small.

At the top, you’ll find a panoramic viewpoint, a small museum, and a lovely restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the mountains. On a clear day, you can see Mont Blanc and even the Matterhorn in the distance. I spent around 3–4 hours there, just taking in the views, walking through the snow, and soaking up the stillness. It felt like standing on top of the world.

This solo trip — from the calm waters of Lake Annecy to the towering peaks of Chamonix — was everything I needed. Peaceful, awe-inspiring, and beautifully grounding.
